5 August 2023 Guildford Castle England

Last official day in England, and the weather was back to it’s old tricks. Thunder, Lightning, and heavy rain. I did get to see Guildford Castle. The gardens around it were pretty amazing, but they should have been, with all the rain that this place has received in the month of July. Most news channels are reporting that July had 300% more rain than average, and it did affect my trip a little bit, but that’s the breaks. I did give up high 90’s in Alabama for low 60’s in England for nearly a month, so that’s good, right?

Guildford castle isn’t one of the most well known castles in Surrey England, but it was still nice. It was started by William the Conqueror right after he became King, and was known as a hunting lodge for a while. It was never attacked, and King Henry II did stay in it, but around the 14th Century, it was turned into a prison.











After the castle, I did a little walking down the streets to get some exercise (in the rain), and snapped a few pictures. England has been a fun trip, but I am excited to be getting back home. 30 days on the road is about the limit for me now that I am retired.



My next blog will come after I have a chance to digest this trip, and critique what I did right, and what I would do over. I am talking about doing this again next year, since most of the planning is already completed, but doing it alone sucks, so I hope I can have some company. That always makes it more fun.

Yesterday was a repositioning day from Exeter to Torquay (pronounced Tor-Key). I keep screwing that pronounciation up. It was rainy, and I had to repositioning some of my junk into suitcases so that I could leave one with stuff I don’t need to carry with me in my rental car. Powderham Castle was one of the castles belonging to the Lords of Devon, the Courtenays. It is also restored, and tours are offered. I have 29 Courtenays in my family tree, and it is a mess to try and sort all of them out. I have thought about joining the Courtenay Society, since they have a resident archivist who could help me, and I may do that eventually, but not on this trip. 3 August 2023 Dunster Castle in Somerset

Today was a beautiful day, and I didn’t get rained out of seeing what I wanted to see. It was an hour and a half from Barnstaple to Dunster, and I got to go by a local golf course and pick up some swag for my golf buddies back home. Dunster is a small village with a castle, a church, a water mill, a butter cross, and a yarn market building in the center of town. It also has a tower on an adjacent hill from the castle that it a pretty good hike to get up to. It rained pretty good on the drive up here, and it sprinkled a little bit this afternoon, but otherwise, it was a perfect day for visiting castles and churches. Dunster castle is the ancestral home of the Luttrell Family, but before that, it was given to William de Mohun (Pronounced Mo-en). William de Mohun was one of the Norman knights that fought along-side William the Conqueror in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings, and as a reward, he was granted Dunster castle. 22 July 2023 Okehampton and Crediton

 It’s another rainy day in England. I started out with a plan, and it was changed because of the weather. Okehampton Castle was home to the Earls of Devon, until it fell into ruins. Located on a hill next to a river, the location was ideal to defend. Unfortunately, the English Heritage Trust closed some of their attractions when adverse weather can cause visitors to slip and fall, so I had a chance to view it from outside the gate and fence. Okehampton Castle  is a  medie val   motte and bailey  castle in  Devon , England. It was built between 1068 and 1086 by  Baldwin FitzGilbert  following a revolt in Devon against  Norman rule , and formed the centre of the  Honour of Okehampton , guarding a crossing point across the  West Okement River .
