October 2023 Itinerary

The last eleven days of my trip will start in the East Anglia area of England, and end up on the west side of London. Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridge, and Essex make up the area northeast of London. Once I get back to London to prepare for my return back home, I will spend a day visiting Hertfordshire.

There are a lot of WWII historical sights in East Anglia, and as posted earlier, I am planning on visiting those. I also plan on swinging by Mildenhall and Lakenheath Air Force Bases, just in case I need to pick up some sundries before my trip ends. My first lodging location is near the town of Scarning. I don’t have very many ancestors from this part of England, but there are several Churchyards I would like to visit.

From Wikipedia:
In Christian countries a churchyard is a patch of land adjoining or surrounding a church, which is usually owned by the relevant church or local parish itself. In the Scots language and in both Scottish English and Ulster-Scots, this can also be known as a kirkyard. While churchyards can be any patch of land on church grounds, historically, they were often used as graveyards (burial places).

When researching genealogy, cemeteries can be very useful. They can help you determine the correct spelling of a person’s name, their date of birth and death, and give you information of where the person lived. Many wealthy people is medieval times were buried in Churches and Cathedrals. There is a website that I am a member of called find a grave, that has memorials to deceased people, and it gives you a website where you can remember loved ones https://www.findagrave.com/ . Many people would like to have the information that they can get off of headstones, so you can also request this information from people who visit the cemeteries.

After Scarning, I’ll head South to Colchester in Essex. I have a lot of places on my list to visit in Essex, so it should be pretty jam packed, before I head back up to Cambridge for a couple of nights.

Time permitting, when I visit many of the final resting places of my ancestors, I would like to fulfill requests for people who can’t come over to England to get the information for themselves.

The last stops I have before returning home will be 2 nights in London to visit St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. When visiting Westminster Abbey, my goal is to record the final resting places of some of my more famous ancestors.

This should wrap up my 97 day adventure. If I stick to my plan, I will visit 89 Castles (or castle ruins), and 95 religious sites. My journey begins in 2 days, and my next post will come from somewhere near London.
