27 July Modbury and Kingsbridge
Today was a rainy, foggy, English mess, but I braved the elements to check out two churches with ties to my ancestors. I have just about completed all of the places I wanted to see in this part of Devon, and I still have three days left, so I may be hanging out in my room if the weather stays nasty.
Modbury was a bust. No parking near the church, so I walked a half a mile to it, and when I saw an open door, there were stone masons and construction workers renovating the floor. They let me in for a few pictures, but that was it since it was a construction zone. I took a few pictures from the outside as well, but no more. I had a lot of ancestors from this place, primarily the Champernowne family, as well as some Phillips and Valletorts.
My antivirus app on my phone has been telling me to turn off data roaming to save a little bit of money, so I did. Once I got to Modbury, in the middle of nowhere, I couldn’t get anything on my phone as far as GPS instruction for finding my way to Kingsbridge. Crazy, but I don’t want to get lost, so I actually followed road signs until I got there. Kingsbridge is where the D’Aumerles and Valletorts are from. There wasn’t any specific location there, so I sought the oldest church in the town center, and when I got there, it was undergoing renovations too. One of those days, I guess.
Last night I hit a pub for dinner, and will probably do the same tonight. The Hole in the Wall pub is supposedly the oldest in Torquay, and I ate healthy (Steak Salad). Tonight I’ll hit the pub next door to it, the Devon Arms. It should be good. At least the beer should be.
God Save Tom Cruise...I mean the King.
